How to Get Past the Zero Mark in the Affiliate Marketing Business

Bookmark and Share

We go to quite a bit of work to try to help you make money through affiliate marketing.

Therefore, it's a little disconcerting when we look at some of the statistics on how many people sign up for affiliate marketing programs and literally don't make one red cent. We have one program on this site where 180 people have signed up and not one of them is making money!

Affiliate Marketing Due Diligence Pays Off In More Ways Than One

Due diligence is a term that applies to more than just your initial review of a possible affiliate program, although that is a vital aspect of the due diligence process. When you choose the right affiliate programs, that's your best bet for actually making money.

But beyond choosing a good program, you have to put diligence--work, it's called--into learning affiliate marketing technologies such as search engine and email marketing, building content for your website, and viewing affiliate marketing in its proper perspective.

If you go into this game thinking that you are going to get rich overnight, or even get rich at all, you may not be realizing that affiliate marketing is just like anything else: you have to work at it if you want to make money at it. That formula is not obsolete because this is the Internet.

Too often, new affiliates get the wrong idea about how quickly they should start making money through affiliate marketing. Impatience leads to impotence in many of these cases.

Don't Go for Broke Too Soon

If you think about affiliate marketing in a logical frame of mind, you will see that keeping your costs low is very important to becoming profitable. Yes, you want to spend money on the necessary tools of your profession, but be wary of overspending without income.

Inexperienced affiliates often overspend on:

-- Web design
-- Affiliate marketing education such as courses and seminars
-- Web hosting

Take the first item as a classic example. If you pay $1,500 to a designer to make a website, and then $50 for site maintenance, and your main affiliate partners are paying you an average of $20 per sale, it is going to take either many months or many customers to become profitable.
Are you willing to wait that long and/or work that hard?

Get Some Money In the Door ASAP

Affiliate marketing success is all about momentum. Once you get your initial commissions checks coming in, you usually get excited enough to where more checks seem to follow on the other first checks.

However, if you never get your first commission, you can't experience that feeling, nor build that momentum that will carry you through the no pay days of building your site out or dealing with unanticipated technical challenges such as broken affiliate links.

That's why probably our best advice to new affiliates is extremely obvious: if you want to make money at affiliate marketing, make money as quickly as possible. Email marketing to your contact list, for example, should not be out of the question if you really believe in the product(s) you are promoting.

If you don't care or know anything about the products you're affiliate marketing, but just want to make easy money for doing nothing, well then good luck with that, too.
